The Genre and storyline of our video

With our short film we had our own genre and this is real life because our video was real life and the viewer would experience everything we experienced in that day. The reason we wanted to do this is the way we wanted the viewer to see insight's into different people's life's not just one person.

Problem's with the project

Well we had a few hitches through the way one of them was we lost 2 group member's along the way because they left the course. Also on Flash there was some actionscript error's that kept coming up but we sorted them out before showing you today our interactive video.

The other problem we had in flash was linking the URL to youtube but that sorted itself out when we uploaded it to a server so it was a local script error, but we sorted that out as well.

The website through student eye's are on

This is the website where the journey begins you can view people's profile's and explore what people are up to, and view there video's. The website has come out as the drawing's showed and I like the effect, the only thing i would change next time is make the website fit the whole web browser.

Here is the website:http://cyanoxide.co.uk/film/

StoryBoard

This is a drawing of our storyboard, what we try to portray in the storyboard is we don't know what will occur in our filming but we break it down in three part's first breakfast, lunch and dinner, because these are important part's of a day, and then we said film other key thing's that you do through the day for example I walk to University so I filmed a little bit of me walking to University. So we took most of our inspiration from a life in a day which was on youtube. The reason there is not much story boarding for our project is the way we don't know what happens on a normal day because it is a big adventure.

This is our website page and it has link's linking to all of our profile's like you would link on Facebook but our Facebook is a little different when you go on Dale's page there are post's and you click on the post's, which link to the video's on youtube. And then in Youtube there are link's you can click on to see what other people are doing when you are doing something. I liked the idea of doing this because its different and it is like what would happen if you could post video's of what you are doing at that time.

Digital Storytelling Continued

When Browsing the Internet i found a PDF on 7 Things you should know about Digital Storytelling.
Number one was:
-Digital Storytelling is a practice of combining narrative with digital content included in this is:
Images, Sound and Video to create a short video.
-Our short film has all of the content in, but in the video we created we didn't want to edit it that much because we wanted our film to be original.

-Digital Stories can be Instructional, Persuasive, Historical and reflective.
-Our Video feature's instructional part's because you have to press button's which is like a instruction. and in the part on the website where it say's write your post it Tell's you to go on the website.

-Storytelling can be effectively applied to almost anything.
-That's why are telling a story by follow our day.

-Constructing a narrative and communicating it effectively require the storyteller to think carefully about the topic and consider the audiences perspective.
-We don't have much narrative because it's not a planned script.

-Group's of student's can collaborate on digital stories
- Our group collaborated on digital stories which is how we came up with the idea of following our-self around.

More on Interactive storytelling

Interactive storytelling was founded in the 1970s is a kind of game, where players become a protagonist or act in the footsteps of a character in a story, this makes the story become a piece of interactive media in real-time.
Interactive storytelling can be hard to create because it has to keep to it's genre without breaking any of the stock characteristics that the genre holds.
Interactive stories come in two forms, interactive storytelling and interactive fiction, these two are very distint. Interactive storytelling focuses on the drama involved, and interactive fiction usually focuses on puzzle type games.
A good example of a recent interactive story is LA Noire, this is a game that is due to come out in May on xbox and playstation 3, although it is a game this is the first video game ever to be shown at the Tribeca film festival as a 60 minute long film. The game will be based heavily on plot and film-noire elements.

Digital Storytelling technique's

I was researching into digital storytelling techniques and I came across Storytelling, on this website it talk's about the plot more than anything else and I learn't a few fact's.

These Fact's are:
-The plot is the course your story takes and the events that happen within it.
-Our Plot is to follow action's that we come across in a normal day.
-"But if you think of your life as a story, then each day is a new adventure"
-The quote off the website is true, so that's why our film doe's not have a real structure to it, it is just filming the most exciting thing you do everyday so i just carried my camera around everywhere and used it when needed.
-"We see people communicating plot all the time through social networks"
-This quote is true and that's why we have put Facebook into our design because every time you write a post, you are making a plot.

There are loads of good tip's and hint's on the website but I pulled a few of the best the website is below:

Interactive Storytelling

Interactive story telling is a type of computer entertainment where the user navigates a story line.
Our project consists of the viewer picking a certain post from our Facebook page's and seeing what happens in a normal student day.

The earliest storytelling techniques date back to 1970's with effort's roger schank's research at Northwestern University and the experimental program TaleSpin.

I saw online the other day at this website, http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-20048013-52.html
Where the Tribeca Film Studios want to fund digital storytelling so it is a big part of the internet and world at the moment and could be the next big internet sensation.

Also online the Watchmen film has an interactive story and its really good and the objective is to find the killer, but you have to use a search box to tell the site what items you see on a page. I really like this type of story telling but it would be hard for us to do but maybe in the future you could use a first person film and then use a search box to decide what the person doe's like a life like Sim's it would be a good project but a evolution for our project.
Below is the watchmen interactive game:

Camera Style

Due to the nature of the cinematography, a story line is hard to achieve without a large amount of interactivity between people whilst using the camera style. Because of this we kept the story line in the videos to a minimum. Instead we decided to go with a more documentary style interactive video.

There are four of us and each one lives in a different place. One lives in a different city and catches the train to uni, another lives at home with family. one live in a flat and I live in uni halls. The idea is to see how are days are different because of this.

Cloverfield

Cloverfield is a first person view movie that tells the story of how a group of six people try to escape from New York as a Godzilla style monster is attacking the city. J.J. Abrams thought of the idea whilst in Japan, he saw Godzilla toys and thought that America needed a monster of its own that was a bit more intimidating than King Kong. And so Cloverfield was born.

When the movie came out the cinematography style hadn't really been used that much only in one or two films and cause members of the audience to get motion sickness but now there are a lot more films and TV programs that use the style including The Peep Show.

Interaction

For our interactive part of our video we have come up with the idea of using Flash. As we are using facebook profiles elsewhere in each of our videos we thought it would be a nice idea to continue this idea and use this for our interactive part of the video.
We will screenshot our facebook group for the file (The Students-Eye film group) and each of our facebook profiles, and put these into Flash. The Students-Eye page will have each of our pictures on it, you will then be able to click on each member of the group and be taken to their Facebook profile page. From this page you will then be able to click parts of the page to take you to either part of our video, or the whole video.
We liked this idea because it makes our interactive film a lot more interesting and fun to make and watch.

Point Of View Technique

Point of view means from our own perspective, sight and look. Point of View shots have been around for many years, this technique is used to show the viewer what we can see, this can give a sense of how the character/actor is feeling, what they can see and how they see it from there point of view. There are many different type of point of view shots, such as filming over someone shoulder, this gives the same point of view feel but keeps the character still in shot. There can also be joint point of view shots which is a shared view of what can be seen by more than one character.
Point of view shots are more well known in video games, as you play most games through the eyes of a character, this helps the person playing the game feel more involved in the game and gives a sense of them being there in real life.
Many films use the point of view shot so that the viewer watching can't see who the actor is, this is usually then revealed later on in the film. A good example of this can be seen in the film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a large part of the film is viewed through Jekyll's eyes until he begins to speak which is where his identity is first revealed to the audeince.

The Technology:
Usually point of view shots are taken with mounted cameras, this is so that they do not have to be hand-held. Many people have been known to use these cameras in cars and even on helmets etc. As technology has continued to get smaller and smaller over years, this has led to manufacturers being able to make tiny self-contained cameras that can be mounted in many places and be very reliable.

Storyline For Our Project

I have came up with a storyline for our project. We are each part of scientific experiment where we have been given contact Len's camera's which follows everywhere we go for a day but we have to post on You tube our video's after we film part's of our day. We also have to post on Facebook what we do.

I will be drawing a type of storyboard for this but you don't know what you will be doing in your day so it's hard to storyboard idea's because then that would be reverting your normal day.

Peep Show

Peep show is a great way to show first person filming, but the good thing about this film is the way they have made it funny as well.

The show star's David Mitchell & Robert Webb
The Peep Show has won a Bafta for Best British Sitcom

We Wanted like the same filming effect the peep show give's to people, a very good filming technique where it feel's like you are in the viewer's head.

This is the link to see what peep show is like:

Interactive Video

For our brief this term we have been asked to design and create an interactive video. We started by creating a few storyboards and experimenting with different ideas. There have been many different types of interactive videos in the past, these can vary from choosing what happens next in a story to watching clips and being able to click on different items around the video to view more, a bit like point and click games but video form.
These videos can be uploaded straight onto the internet using websites such as youtube and vimeo, which you can then click different links to go to different places. Another popular method of making interactive videos is through Adobe Flash, many people use Flash to make games, videos and many different types of interactive media.

Exsiting Approaches

 http://www.youtube.com/user/lifeinaday

An existing approach which links closely to what we are doing for our video is 'Life in a day'. Life in a day took place on 24th July 2010 by thousands of people from around the world uploading parts of their day to Youtube. This would later be made into a documentary about an honest glipse of a  single day on Earth.
This unique approach to documentary making soon got around and the director Kevin Macdonald and a team of editors ended up with over 80,000 clips which was over 4500 hours worth of footage which he is making into a 90 minute documentary. There have been many teasers put onto Youtube for the film that will be released later in 2011.

My Video

As we are all doing our own separate idea for the video, I have to come up with a plan of my life in a day and what I will film.
To start with I will film my morning, this will involve my alarm going off, putting towels on the sink ready to shower and making toast and a cup of tea.
The middle part of my day will show me leaving the flat, walking to University and clicking onto the other members of our groups Facebook profiles, this will link us all together as friends in the video, each member of our group will do this. This also shows us all as Digital Natives, and how we have grown up. Social Networks have come a fast growing way of connecting with each other so this is a nice effect for our video and for linking us together.
The end of my day will be myself walking home, and getting into my car. I decided to put this shot into my video as driving is quite a big part of my life. It is a hobbies that I love. I also love Photography so part of my day will shot in photos and put together in sequence.

Our Idea's

Our group has been discussing what we can do for our interactive video today, and we have come up with the idea of making a point of view Student Life video. This video will be from our own perspective of student life, what we will do is film important parts of our day, and edit it together to make a short video about students lives. As there are 4 of us we will only need a few minutes of footage each otherwise this will become too long. Each video will be different as we will all have our own point of view and different lives.
As for making it interactive we have discussed a few possible ideas between us these involve:
1. Passing or having 1 familiar object in each of our own videos.
2. Making it in Flash and being able to click on different parts of the video to change/go to different things.
3. Uploading all of our videos to youtube/vimeo/flickr etc and making a story out of them. This will involve going to different links to see different parts of each others days.
We haven't quite decided on what we will use for our interactive part of the video yet, so we are going to start filming our daily life and editing the video footage now before we decide.

Research Blaire Witch Project

The reason i am researching the Blaire witch project is the way it has link's to the short film we are creating this is through the 1st person camera so the camera is basically viewing what you see.
I like the films with these camera shot's because it make's it feel you are right there in the action.
So a few fact's about the Blaire Witch Project if you have not seen it.

-Well to start with it's a 1st person film

-It was made in 1999 and is an American horror film

-The film was produced by haxan film's

-The story of the film is :

Three Young student film maker's hiked to Burkittsville, Maryland to film a documentary about a known legend called the Blaire Witch and then the student's went missing.

The viewer's are told that they were never seen or heard from again although the film equipment and sound equipment were found supposedly a year after they went missing.

The reason I think this film relates to our film is the way they were all friend's filming what happens when they document stuff and want to show the audience what they were doing when they were documenting idea's.

Where our film has the basic concept of we are all friend's (well I hope) and we want to document what go's on in our daily routine and what we go through in a day some people experience day's differently. This is why we have Becky who lives in her own rented house not to do with the University. We have Jamie who lives in student accommodation, then we have Nathan who live's at home but in Torquay so he has to catch a train to get to the university, then you have me(Dale) who lives at home in Plymouth. So its getting the life's of 4 different lifes.

Another research video

I found another interactive video but this time its in the same video you control what a man doe's using a voodoo doll. Here is the video i think it's great fun to play and laugh at a man beating himself up.

I like the way it's an interactive video in the same Time-line. This could be used in our video because then it could jump to different parts of a day.

im guna kick start things off by showing off some research on youtube

I stumbled across this video on You tube and it sparked idea's take a look at the video first:

What I like about this film is the way you decide what happens in the film. So near the end you get asked weather you want to let the guy in your car. This is what we kind of want on our video's like a path you can follow also in our video we intend to put a small video. in the corner to show what other people are doing while we are on the main screen.
